crayons
water colors
anything where it has a lot of pieces that can go anywhere
(foam frames are awsome) either put glue everywhere on it or as her where she wants the piece then put glue there and let her place it

anything that doesnt involve alot of dexterity would work great
even though she’s smart she probably doesnt have the dexterity to do alot of crafts well yet (my very smart 3 yr old still sucks at crafts)

price wise try dollar stores and such for cheapy crafts and walmart for crayons and paints

dont expect a masterpiece with paint yet alone actually coloring in the lines till age… Well you know what i still cant color in the lines lol but i would say age 5 or 6 for that

Mike answers:

Your problem might be what grade you are looking for. To ask the price of a 2×4 is like asking “how long is a piece of string?” Other variables are whether it is new growth, as Home Depot normally uses, or old growth. Old growth is better, more stable for building. But then you might be looking for clear, no knots, and for that you will pay a buck or two. Do you want treated lumber?

Don’t go to a website, either call the store or go in, prices vary in accordance to how much it cost to get it into the store.

LOOKING FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON A GAZEBO STRUCTURE?

Several years ago I saw a pattern in a garden magazine for a gazebo type structure made from rebar. I remember the basic structure but not the measurements.
You take 2 “short” and 1 “long” piece of rebar, wire together (or weld?). Make four of them. Anchor them in the ground. Pull the long pieces of rebar together in an arc and secure.
I believe they had wired apple trees to grow on it.
Does anyone have any idea where to find this – maybe you saw the plan, too?
Thank you, an arbor is what I meant. I still wish I could remember the name of that magazine!!!

When trying to remember how something looked in an old magazine project, don’t worry about diminsions and shapes. To build a gazebo to fit your needs, Draw a “scale” drawing of the style you like, pull measurements from the drawing, and set out and build it the way you feel it should look. From the description of what you indicate you plan to use the structure for, sounds more like an ARBOR, than a gazebo. Go to Home Depot, they have a kiosk of How To books that will give you ideas, and some even offer “plans” .

Take a look at Huntsville Botanical Gardens and Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Also consider state, city and county parks that have lakes. A locale that isn’t on a lake, but has a beautiful view of the valley, is Grandview in Lookout Mountain GA. All of the above have websites. Take a look at www.eventective.com for other ideas.

Sausage, pepper and onion sandwiches are great:
hoagie/kaiser rolls are about 4-5 for $3
Italian Sausage (you can get mild or spicy or both and grill at local park) are 5 for $5-6
Green pepper (get 1 for every pack of sausage) sliced if grilling $1 each
Onion (1 for every pack of sausage) sliced if grilling $1 each
Provolone Cheese (1 slice for every sausage) pack of 12-16 slices is $5-6

Grill the sausage, peppers, and onions, put all on roll then add a slice of cheese on top and put that over or on the grill just long enough to toast the bread and melt the cheese. These are a huge crown pleaser in my house during football season!

Also, Doing a spread like Fruits and cheeses can be super cheap- if you buy blocks of cheddar and american, jack cheddar, etc. (the generic supermarket brands are $4 for a BIG chunk) you slice it up and add sliced strawberries, grapes, and some hummus with bread or pita or cheap Ritz crackers, it looks nice and fills people up! It might not be great for sitting in the sun in a local park though

hamburgers and hotdogs are always a good fall back, and Pork ribs (NOT BEEF OR BABY BACK) are like 3/4lbs for $9, just grab a few packs, dump on some store brand BBQ ($2 each) and maybe even do corn on the cob.

The possibilities are endless, and you would be suprised how far you can go if you take the time to budget and make a list before you go to the store!

A candle light dinner cruise. If you are near the ocean how about a resturant near the shore. With the weather being so nice, it is the perfect time to dine outside. Or how about this. If it is within your price range. Make reservations and a nice hotel, stick to the weekend, the rates will be better. Also look into rates that are specials i.e. That will include dinner or breakfast. These are usually listed as romantic getaway. Then order room service (sometimes the dinner package is room service.) Get yourself checked in earlier and spread rose petals all over the bed and get the battery operated candles. Some hotels are non smoking and even candles will set off the fire alarm. Although that would definately be something to sweep him off his feet. (LOL). But you could probably get away with a few candles in the jar. Too see if you can get an ocean front view or city view. Also when checking in mention that you are there to celebrate something, you may end up getting an upgrade on the room or some breakfast coupons the next day. Wish him happy birthday from me and have fun.

Will it be chilly for your guests?? You need to take that into consideration… If so, you may want to rent those outdoor propane heaters…

How about a garland of leaves surrounding the arched area where you will stand. You can find them already assembled (like a vine) from JoAnn’s or Michael’s and weave them together. The colors would be beautiful framing you…

A carpet of colored leaves (thrown by your flower girl) would be a unique and very “original” change from the white cloth runner that can really cost!!! Just practice with the flower girl so that she spreads the leaves evenly…

Have large baskets of real or paper (party supply place) leaves for guests to throw instead of rice or bubbles. It will look like it is raining in living colors!!

(I am into natural, eco-friendly celebrations, can you tell>)

They work fast as well. You can have them design it so as to keep the price low. Then they can send you the file and you can print as many as needed. The company suggested it to them when my friend were on tight budget. Didnt even think of doing that but that is good option as well.

How funny. My wedding was last August and that is exactly what I did. I made my own invitations in spanish and english. I more a less estimated how many of each I needed. The ones who definitely needed spanish went out first, then the ones in english for the ones who needed english only, and last the bilingual people got what remained since it didn’t matter. I hope that makes sense. I took mine to a local print shop, so it would be easier to print more if needed because they had my invite already on file and I could call and order more if needed.

No special ink is needed. I would just recommend trying a few sheets out with different ink weights, and quality levels, like quick print, normal and best. Sometimes, depending on the paper, the ink may get too heavy and bleed. Usually on vellum and lighter papers. I would just do a couple test runs on your paper before you run them all through at the different quality levels I said above. I ended up needing to use the quick print on my printer. It didn’t lay the ink so hard as the normal.

Honestly, check office supply and craft stores. Loads of people are doing diy invites lately, so more and more places are carrying more and more varieties of them. For example, my fiance and i have a very specific pattern we are using on our wedding stuff, and yesterday we found it on a generic box of invites in a craft store. Its great how easy some of this stuff is to find.

Also, check out www.offbeatbride.com. There are LOADS of diy sites listed in the adds on there, and offbeatbride approves all the adds, so if they are on there it is because someone used them and had a good experience. My favorite of the ones i have seen is Twisted Limb, they do lovely handmade papers. Along with the adds like that, they usually have a diy idea at least once a week so you can learn how to make something.

Mike answers:

Since it is a rectangle, then 2 sides have equal lengths as well as the other 2 sides. In other words the two lengths will be equal size and the two widths will be of equal size as well. Having this said look at the side of the rectangle opposite of the unknown (if its the length you are looking for look at the size of the opposite length, otherwise if it is the width look at the opposing width.)

To look for the size of each side divide 1000 by 4, after that divide two sides by half and add that value to the other two sides.

Mike answers:

I have heard that the invisible fences used for dogs don’t work for cats in that they tend to jump forward across it rather than back away from it.

We have fencing around our yard made from Deer Netting and PVC pipes and it keeps my 6 cats in wonderfully. We put it up several years ago and a cat flap into the garage/house so they can go in/out at will. It’s wonderful! We don’t have the worry about them getting hit by cars, fights with other cats (which is the major way feline aids is spread), getting into poisons/antifreeze or bothering our neighbors.

There are several web sites that sell cat fencing ready to be put up and there are web sites that show you how to make the fencing yourself and put it up. Do an Yahoo search for Cat Fencing.

While this type of fencing is not totally invisible, the deer netting used is hardly noticeable.

How do I hang a bat house on a tree?

I built bat houses as a service project for a local conservation club. And they want me to hang the houses on the trees instead of poles or their buildings, even though I told them that hanging the houses on the trees has proven to be least effective.

I can’t find plans on how to hang the houses on trees anywhere!

Secure it directly to the trunk with one stainless 2 – 3″ screw. You don’t want it to swing around. Using a stainless screw will not damage the tree.

Pick a tree that is at the outside edge of the wooded area, but no direct afternoon sun.

Hang it 15-20 ft. From the ground, if possible.

Oh, and bat houses don’t become bird houses if they’re built correctly — birds won’t land or nest upside down. And you do want bats — they eat their weight in flying insects like mosquitoes every week.

Dwarf Peach Tree Against House?

Mike answers:

Good Evening Bob,

We walk difference places each morning or night. We walked at Redondo Beach tonight. Can you believe that full moon? It was a beautiful night and walk.

I have been a gardener for sixty (60) years. I have a 20×20 ft. Vegetable garden, a beautiful back and front yard with dozens of flowers, trees, and nine (9) fruit trees. I have lived in this house for forty years.

My driveway runs for sixty (60) feet along the south side of my house in the backyard. There is a eight (8) feet strip of land between my driveway and the foundation of my house.

I saw your question this morning, but I had to take the measurements to make sure I was right. I just got back from a business deal.

Planted in this strip of land: one dwarf Gold Dust Peach Tree which is fifteen years old; one dwarf Strawberry Guava Tree which is fifteen years old; one Robertson Orange Tree which is fifteen years old; one dwarf Satsuma Mandarin Orange Tree which is twenty years old; and one dwarf improved Meyers Lemon Tree which is twenty years old.

My driveway is in perfect shape with no cracks, no rises in the cement, or root holes. The foundation around my house is also very very perfect. I have never had to cut any roots or redo my driveway or foundation. Nor does it look like I will ever have any repairs or damages.

I do have to prune back a few of the leaves and branches on the citrus trees. This is because the fruit gets to heavy. The weight causes the leaves and small branch to lean about a half foot into the driveway. They will scratch the cars. I only have to do this every two or three years. The other trees are fine.

Plant your tree. Do not worry. Good luck with your new tree. By the way, I wish you could see and smell my backyard tonight. All the trees are in bloom. You and your family have a great week. Peace, from Los Angeles.

How do I go about building an Adult Tree House?

Mike answers:

Hmmm. Organization? Does this infer that you want us to suggest a plan?

As an ADULT, I want to assume you have seen houses being built. The process would be similar whether or not you actually used a tree. Obviously if that’s your plan, then it should be hoped that the tree is substantial, and that you won’t damage or possibly kill it, eventually defeating your Tree house.

Plans are unlikely available, especially for free, and YOU can design what suits you, even using graph paper, scaling the measurements, taking a materials list to a major home improvement store for them to price out your list.

You might also want to check in with code and zoning enforcement agencies, if that becomes an issue.

Materials should likely be PT lumber at least, some type of roofing, some system allowing access, IE: Stairs/Ladder and some notion of stabilizing the structure. Certainly anything large would take more planning, materials, and engineering.

I have to go back to the Organizing however, which is confusing. You could always use the “Huck Finn” method. Have others do the work for you.

Mike answers:

Fruit trees are rarely a problem for house foundations,as they have smaller root systems.l hope you chose a small tree variety. It’s a problem for trees like oak or ash etc which grow very large

When buying bare rooted roses. The latest you can plant into the ground is mid December. The roses are packed bare rooted in Sept,so after mid Dec the rose dries out and cannot survive in the packaging. If you bought yours in Jan than there is a good chance it is dead (but maybe you got lucky) scrape the bark with your finger nail,if green than it will survive,if brown than dead.

Next time you ask a question take a photo and post it alongside,so everyone can see the pond design and garden

Another wedding venue question?

I sort of asked a similar question but I need to word it better;

Which would you choose?

1. Up North- 4 hours away from my family, 8 hours away from my fiance’s family. (Everyone in both families goes up north at least once of year.) We’re all outdoor/hunting people.
Pros: Lodge/Reception/Ceremony on the same grounds ($50.00/night), club is closed within gates so driving is minimal. Golf course, archery/shooting range, skeet and trap, beach, fishing, hiking, four wheelers, dirt bikes, boating. Family will most likely we taking a weekend off because of the drive, so there will be plenty of things to do together, since we don’t see my fiance’s family- they live in Ohio, we’re michigan. Food is wonderful and is only $13-$17/plate, but without alcohol- which they charge al lot for.

Cons: Not as formal as I’ve always wanted. People will be slightly separated during reception- main ball room (fights only like 9 tables), a bar room off the side completely by it’s self, and the slightly higher room with only a large doorway to see out into the ball room. If it rains, there is no where to have the ceremony in a appropriate place except next to the fire place with wild game on the walls. (We don’t really want to get married in a church.) Also (Everyone tells me this is no big deal, but I think it is) when we’re done eating, we’d need to get rid of the tables (which we’ll need to rent) to clear for the dance floor.

2. Venue near my home. Pros; Alcohol is included with price/plate (33.50), hall will set up and take down decorations- they told us to just show up with our stuff and come back for the wedding. They will provide chairs, linens, scarfs and little white lights, china, silverware, cake cutting, glass to enclose any centerpieces we choose with candles, 5 1/2 hour bar, champagne for the bridal tables, chair covers, and table. Also- they someone on staff who makes cakes at discounted rate. Ceremony will take place out through the ball where they have a gazebo and they set up the chairs and provide clergy for $300 extra. If it rains, they will move everything inside for no extra cost. Owner coordinates everything on the day of the wedding, right down to providing a card box. She’ll work with our band, photographer, etc. AND my aunt and several friends were married there to attest that this place is actually real, lol. Reception hall has More than enough room to have the dance floor free from tables, and has a stage for the bridal party and then the band.

Cons: Lodging is probably 40-50 dollars more per night off site. Price/plate is somewhat more expensive. (30.55 although that includes everything mentioned above, including alcohol) People would have to drive from the reception to they’re lodging. Depending on when people choose to arrive from Ohio, we might not get to spend extra time with the family.

Some things to add- my fiancee and I aren’t able to contribute much. We have credit card debt, still paying for an apt, and a little bit of school loans and we’re going to finance the honeymoon. But we’d like to pay and upgrade the bar and menu to pick up some of the cost, and if we meet our quest list quota, we’ll pay for any extra friends we may have.

Final note- My parent’s are the only ones paying for the actual wedding.

So, if you were us- which would you choose? We’re leaning towards the place closest to us, because it’s more convenient and we both love the hall.

Mike answers:

Speaking from years and years of experience as a wedding planner, you should choose the hall that is offering such a worry free package. You may think that you will have lots of time to spend doing fun things with your visiting family members, but you won’t. The day before your wedding will be very busy and the wedding day is so full of things for you to be concerned about the fewer worries you have about exectuting the actual event the better off you will be. The prices you quoted for the food and alcohol and the hall and all the amenities is very very reasonable. You should definately take that option. Don’t worry about your guests having to travel from their hotels, that is normal when out of town guests come to a wedding unless you have the wedding and reception actually in one of the hotels.

If you call around and check with the hotels closest to your site, you can get them to quote you a room block price for your wedding guests. They will reserve the rooms under the name of your wedding (ie, smith/jones wedding) and give your guests a discount on the rooms. Be sure to include a little welcome basket for your out of town guest….things like small boxes of gourmet cookies or crackers and cheese.. Fruit….bottled water or small bottles of wine….a keepsake post card from your town….and a note welcoming them are good choices.

Destructive Dog Advice?

My family adopted a great dane/black lab mix several months ago. It was unplanned, as it had been abandoned in a pet shop and was being taken care of by the staff. Our daughter fell in love with him at the store, and knowing that our other dog would love a companion, we decided to take him in. While we had not planned to get a dog on this day, we had been talking about getting one soon. From my stand point, this was fate.

Since adopting the dog, we have had him checked out by the vet, given him all of his shots, had him neutered, put him on a very healthy diet, given him regular exercise, and shown him love in every way we know how. He is wonderful with our daugthter and makes our other dog very happy too.

Now for the problems . . . he is beyond destructive. If he is out of my sight for a mere 10 minutes (which isn’t much time when I’m chasing around a two year old) something is bound to be destroyed. He has chewed up countless child’s toys, my bedroom comforter, my bed rails, an area rug, etc. The second he is spotted and knows he did something bad, he pins his ears against his head and pees everywhere. It’s not from yelling, hitting, or anything like that. All I have to do is gasp and look in his direction and he starts peeing everywhere. If I try to get him outside, he starts running in circles and just covers more area with potty.

We have tried to offer him some training. We are not professionals, but trained our Boxer well and just want him to learn some simple commands. Again, when asked to do anything, he pees. Just now I called him over, asked him to sit (which he did) and when I praised him for doing a good job, he peed all the floor and ran away.

When left comletely alone, he will play, run, jump, etc. He’ll come and jump into my lap and want to snuggle or get up onto my bed. In other words, he’s great if I allow him to chew everything and never try to correct behaviors or ask him to do anything. I am a stay at home mom so he is not left alone very often. When he is, he is put in a crate with water and chew toys. I can’t even put him outside when he’s acting up becuase he’s started chewing on my daughter’s brand new wooden playhouse, sandbox, and destroyed the curtains to our gazebo.

My entire family loves this animal, but on a realistic level, don’t know that we can keep him any longer. I am in tears at the thought of finding him a new home, but sick of being in tears because of everything he keeps ruining. We are out of money to replace things that should have never needed replacing.

Any SERIOUS thoughts would be greatly appreciated. While I love the idea of having two dogs and I love the joy he brings to both my daugther and other dog, my stress has hit the ceiling. Please help.
The dog is 8 1/2 months old and done teething. I don’t know what’s worse, the chewing or the peeing. I think he must have been abused in the past to create the peeing behavior (since it’s not marking or unable to hold it), but we have to get this under control if we are ato keep him.

Mike answers:

Your dog appears to be in the ultra destructive stage. He may be done teething but he is not done chewing. That can go on for several years. Possible solutions.
When he is not with you – you could try tying him around your waist with a long rope so he goes with you wherever you go and is not out of your sight – you could crate him when you can not keep an eye on him. Maybe you could find a larger pen – they sell them in dog magazines or petco where you can put him and he has room to walk around alittle. But crating him alot has its downsides.
He needs lots of exercise every day and as a stay at home mom with a 2 year old that may be something that is difficult for you to provide but if he is exercised he will be less likely to chew from boredom. When I say exercise a good 30 min to 60 min strenuous walk.

The peeing when he is “caught,’ is a sign of submission and insecurity. And has nothing to do with being housebroken but just make sure he goes potty outside on regular intervals (keep him on empty). One suggestion that may help is every time you approach this dog you do not make eye contact until you have given him lots of treats for him to eat. If he pees the treats stop. If he doesn’t the treats continue. He needs to feel secure in your presence so no yelling or scolding or gasping just calmness and control and praise when he doesn’t pee.

He would benefit from a trainer and it would probably be cheaper in the long run.
But sometime you have to live thru this chewing stage by watching him all the time. When he is outside with your children’s toys he needs to be supervised so he doesn’t eat them.

Wedding DIY set up – ‘morning of’ catch 22!?

We creative/money saving types love the DIY wedding movement. (Create your own beautiful decorations with the help of wedding blogs and craft sites!)

Those sites help you to hone in on a vision that suits you. (I could look at those blogs for hours, picturing exactly how I’d arrange things!)

The problem?
Many of us do DIY to save money. But when it comes to setting it all up on the morning of, how do you do it?

Unless your venue lets you come in 24 hours in advance to decorate (many don’t), you’ll either:

1. Be up late the night before arranging things (instead of spending that time relaxing with your sweetie, friends and family).

2. Expect friends and family to do all the work on the morning of, running them ragged instead of letting them enjoy the day (and get ready themselves!).

3. Make it truly DIY– get in there and do it yourself with some willing helpers on the morning of (this could take hours, leaving you minimal time to get ready). If I could clone 5 on the morning of, that would be perfect. Ha!

4. Hire a stylist/decorator who will make the most of your pretty DIY decorations with their creativity (yay!), but will drain your budget at the same time (effectively counteracting the whole point of DIY decorations).

—-

I am hoping to hire a couple creative souls on Craigslist to help, but then there’s the issue of not knowing if they’ll actually show up, etc. …another point for a professional stylist/decorator who would be accountable. See where I’m going with this?

*****
WHAT TO DO? — What would YOU do? — How did your DIY wedding unfold?
*****

p.s. Don’t get me wrong: I love the idea of gathering some friends and family and letting them help (if they want to) – it can be a fun bonding experience while the families get to know each other. But I do not like the idea of *expecting* all of your guests to help you, especially if they had plans the morning of, or simply want to take it easy. I want my guests to enjoy themselves, not resent me for squeezing as much as I can out of them.

Thoughts?

There might be yet one more option for you! Most larger companies, especially corporate ones like law firms, banking institutions, manufacturers, real estate, etc…have people who do this sort of thing as part of their job. They set up board and other meetings, put together holiday parties etc. I’d guess in many cases they’re like executive assistants, etc. Or, another option, trade associations (American Heart, etc) always have meeting planners on staff. These folks are all dependable, they’re detail-oriented, etc. Could you send a shout-out to a bunch of your friends and guests, asking if they know of someone at their place of work they can recommend? You can tell them you’ll meet with the person and decide if it will work, so they don’t feel pressure on this, but I’d think you’d get several names that way.

A lot of people would like an opportunity to do something like this, and it shouldn’t be a budget breaker. Maybe $30-$40 an hour for a few hours of work. I’d think the setup would be of more concern than the breakdown, where a few friends could get it done.

What are some really unique DIY clothing projects that people don’t normally think of?

I don’t have a ton of money so I was thinking of making/altering my old/thrifted clothes. The articles on About.com aren’t enough for me, they’re too plain and there’s not enough stuff for guys. I like a lot of fashion from the 60′s to the early 2000′s, I like punk fashion, glam rock, fashioncore/scene, basically anything inspired by rock or even pop culture and high fashion.

I want to DIY nearly everything I have in my closet and everything I wear. I’ve gotten ideas like painting my jeans, cutting up and putting holes on the sides on an XL tshirt and lacing it up to make a more fitted tank top, getting knock off shoes and painting/sewing patches onto them, and taking screens off old tshirts and putting them on hoodies.

I’m sick of everything I want to buy from a store being too expensive for me and the cheaper versions fall apart or are just not the quality I want, or doesn’t have enough spark. There’s a lot of stuff I could just DIY but I’m sort of lost on where to start on some things. I’ve searched Google a million times and I haven’t stumbled upon any awesome blogs that give tutorials on how to make things you don’t see every day.

If anyone could recommend any DIY fashion and crafts to me that would be amazing
I actually haven’t tried the pants/shoes paintings…. Yet. I’m about to very soon for something I want to wear to the Pride Parade. I’d totes tell what it is, but I don’t want anyone to take my idea until I’ve worn it myself. Could I just get a dog chain from Family Dollar for like $2? Lol.
I’m just gonna say this again where it might be more noticeable; I’m a guy. If you have anything specifically unisex/male, that would rock.

~~~…one job I did auto-body and what I did there was dent pulling, sanding paint off, painting, took car apart put back together, welding holes, installed side windows,change brakes.~~~
Auto Body Technician–list any professional certificates like maybe your welding certificate.  Took car apart and put back together means nothing.  I assume you did no engine repair work.  How about expert restoration abilities including dent repair, paint matching and painting expert.  Did you provide any direct customer service?  Handle any money or run a cash register?  How about locate and negotiate value for used car parts?
~~~For the other job I did construction and what I did was dry wall, painting, run errands, bathroom remodeling, windows, fix doors, control power tools~~~
What did you do for the bathroom remodeling? That could be just paint for all anyone knows. What did you do when you did the bathroom remodel? Tile and grout? Electrical fixture installation? Plumbing new or existing fixtures? Lay flooring or carpeting? Install new windows or replace windows. You say fix doors—what is that? Did you replace existing doors, install new doors, replace a lock or doorknob? Peep hole? You say control power tools–WHAT tools? List them all. Yes, all. And don’t just limit it to the power tools, what other tools are you experienced using? Can you read and interpret blue prints? Are you good at following directions? Are you dependable and reliable? Eager to learn new things? What would your past supervisors say about you? The new place WILL check with them and you do not want to contradict what they might say, so be sure that you are honest about your skills and qualifications.

You can format your hard drive/Windows partition and do a clean reinstall of 7 with your Windows 7 install disc (assuming the disc is good)… If that doesn’t fix your issues (crashes etc.) or Windows won’t install, it’s probably hardware related. Whether that’s a piece of hardware itself (start by checking the hard drive), or user error is hard to say without seeing your set up.

Also, people running an illegal/pirated version of Windows will have issues with/obtaining future updates released by Microsoft… Not saying you are using an illegal version, just stating a fact.

I would start by checking the hard drive with something like SeaTools (works on non-Seagate hard drives as well): http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools Next would be RAM, etc… Best of luck!
