Linda asks…

Weather- Strength of a Hurricane, Pressure or Wind?

I live directly in the path of Camille and Katrina about a mile from the beach. Katrina’s eye went over my house. Camille was a 5 and Katrina was a “3″. I will throw in Andrew since it is a similar 5.

Katrina wiped out hundreds of structures that survived Camille.

Katrina surge 24-28 feet, Camille and Andrew 15-17 feet.

Katrina eye 32 miles, Camille and Andrew 11 miles.

Katrina and Andrew pressure 922-25 mb, Camille 909 mb (these are Landfalls)

What would have happened to Miami if they had 24-28 feet of water come roaring into town?

How do they meausure wind speed in a hurricane? They miss a great deal if you ask me. Katrina had a certain constant wind howling, with “trains” coming through that were probably 33% above this, and 2 or 3 “super trains” that were probably 50% over and you could just hear trees ripping and popping.

Basic Question: Why is the saffir-simpson scale used?

I think diameter and pressure would be more representative of the power of this heat engine. RSVP?

Mike answers:

I’m also in south MS, and both my sets of grandparents’ homes, as well as my dad’s home, all survived Camille and Katrina with no damage, and they are all a block from the beach. Yet there was so much destruction all around them. Your description of Katrina sounds like their description of Camille, which I was not born for. But I was out walking the dog in Katrina, unaware until later that people were trapped on their roofs about a block or so south of me.

Every storm is different, they literally have their own personalities. Each one has so many variables, some are more about rain, some are more about wind, and some have tons of tornadoes while other have very few. I don’t think diameter is as big of a factor as it may seem, in fact I have read that the bigger a storm gets in diameter the harder it has to work to maintain its strength – which probably explains why a lot of cat 5′s are downgraded before they hit land.

The Saffir-Simpson Scale is used to give an estimate of potential damage. (Weather is the one science that may never be exact, there will always be too many variables.) Here is an exact quote from the National Hurricane Center’s site:

“The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is a 1-5 rating based on the hurricane’s present intensity. This is used to give an estimate of the potential property damage and flooding expected along the coast from a hurricane landfall. Wind speed is the determining factor in the scale, as storm surge values are highly dependent on the slope of the continental shelf and the shape of the coastline, in the landfall region. Note that all winds are using the U.S. 1-minute average.”

Since you’re here on the coast too, you should have their site in your favorites like me: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
