Linda asks…

How to do a DIY Wedding Buffet?

I don’t want to have to pay hundreds on a caterer so I’m hoping to do it myself (with help from friends!)
The wedding venue is 2 hours from the house so Im not too sure how to do it and still have fresh food on the day.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know!

Mike answers:

Find a VFW hall near your venue or a hall you can rent that will allow you to bring your own food. Google the area. Best wishes. :)

Nancy asks…

Are diy wedding invitations better than purchasing them?

I just want to hear opinions from people who have done one or the other. Does it work out cheaper to do it yourself or is it much easier to have one custom made for you?

Mike answers:

It’s really up to you. If you want to keep them simple it would be fairly easy and cheaper to do them yourself. If you want something fancier, it may honestly be less stress to get them done professionally.

Our invites are/were printed on vellum, and then attached with a ribbon to a handmade paper backing with flower petals in it. They look gorgeous and we have had a ton of compliments on them… They were in an invitation box kit and were a pretty decent price.

However, as much as I love them, printing them out was a very stressful ordeal. Among other things, the printer kept crumpling and destroying the vellum sheets, we didn’t realize the RSVP cards were perforated so we only had half what we thought we had, and the printing always seemed crooked. Also the 3 boxes we got all had slight differences, such as different envelopes or different colored ribbons.

Jenny asks…

A little help with DIY wedding Flowers in Illinois?

My mom will be growing all of our wedding flowers and the bridesmaids and myself will be arranging them for the wedding. The wedding is on June 2nd. What type of flowers are mature around then? More specifically red and white flowers..
Thanks for your help!

Mike answers:

There are many red and white flowers available in July. Chrysanthemums, carnations, roses, gerberas, gladiolus, hydrangeas, orchids, peonies, ranunculus and many others. For ideas, checkout a diy wedding flower site: http://www.wholeblossoms.com/ Good luck!

George asks…

What are some cheap diy wedding invitation ideas?

Any ideas will be appreciated. We are getting married in Jamaica and having a party when we get home; pizza, beer, margaritas, cake, beer pong, limbo. We are open to any fun ideas. Thanks a lot!!

Mike answers:

Buy an invitation making kit at Michael or Staples or a similar store. They usually come 50 invites per box. Open up your Microsoft Works and get creative. You can purchase images online and use them as a ‘watermark’ to personalize them or purchase rubber stamps. You can print on vellum and tie in to the card-stock with a decorative ribbon with an image stamped or printed on the card stock… The options are limitless, just use your imagination.

Charles asks…

Anyone know of a good wholesale internet florist? For DIY wedding flowers?

I’m wanting to find a good place where I can order boxes of wedding flowers online for a wholesale price, and put them together myself.

Know of anywhere good?
There is not a Costco in my city or state. There IS a Sam’s club, but I’m not sure how their prices compare. I live in Oklahoma City, just FYI. That’s one of the reasons I was hoping I could order via the internet.

Mike answers:

The greatest place to get the best deals is believe it or not, your local supermarket. Big Y, Super Stop ‘N’ Shop, Stop ‘N’ Shop, and Shaws grocery stores all offer discount flowers at a wholesale price that you can make the bouquets out of. That’s what I did for my wedding and they looked beautiful. You would have never known where they came from. It saves you a bundle
I had gotten all of mine from a Shaws grocery store and b/c I am crafty was able to make gorgeous bouquets ands added some beautiful ribbon I had purchased as well. Any grocery store with a florist section will do this for you. They all will provide you with a huge florist book to go through to see what you want. Every type of flower and color imagineable. They all also offer delivery if needed. Good Luck!
