Will Pro Tools 8 M-powered work on my laptop?

Hey I’ve been looking to upgrade my studio set up and really like the look of Pro Tools 8. The only question is whether or not it will work ok on my current laptop. Here are the system details:

Model: HP G61-110sa notebook.
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10GHz
RAM: 4.00GB
System type: Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit.

I don’t know anything about computers really, so sorry if that info isn’t relevant. Basically I want to know if Pro Tools will install and work fine on this laptop, or if I need to make any changes to the laptop first? Also, I don’t know if this matters but I use this computer for word processing, internet, listening to music and instant messaging programs etc.

Your specs are just fine. For some reason a lot of people have problems installing on Windows 7 but my roommate has M-Powered on his Windows 7 64-bit and he had no problem installing and it runs just fine. I’m really not sure what all the fuss is about. So it should work. I’ve heard from other people they contacted Avid support and they sent them the appropriate drivers and it worked fine after that too.

When using Pro Tools you should only run Pro Tools but you can use you computer for other things when you aren’t using Pro Tools. You can run programs while using Pro Tools too it just tends to be a bit of a resources hog.

In general this is the start if a killer machine. The main problem will be that graphics card, which is not a model for gaming. It’d be great for AutoCAD, but terrible for modern shooters.

I don’t see the CPU cooler listed, which might mean its the stock Intel one. For no more than $30 you could get a much better cooler. (anything from Arctic Cooling)

I do see a few places you could save a lot of money. That motherboard is beautiful, but super expensive for what it is. That CPU also … You could get an LGA1156 version of the same Core i7 for cheaper, which would also make your RAM kit cheaper.

A lot depends on what your budget is. I’d be happy to make some suggestions …. Are you buying in Canada? If so tell me how much and I’ll send you a price list.

CPU and RAM are great
LGA 1366 Board is future-proof (1366 by far has the best upgrade path, since you have hexa-cores and octo cores).

The video card is not for gaming, its for workstations. I think this will help you in photo editing but not in games like crysis.

But you have a good board that is SLI-compatible. So you can add a better graphic card later like GTX480 or HD5850

I think this setup is future proof( will last for 2~3 years). Sandy Bridge is coming out soon :D
The other components are ok you just need to worry about the CPU, GPU and RAM.

Get a better cooling kit for your CPU, its really important if you want your components to last longer.

Bluray is not necessary its too expensive.
